RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman conveyed messages of condolence on Thursday to Colombian President Gustavo Petro following a deadly military aircraft crash that claimed dozens of lives.
In their statements, the Saudi leadership expressed profound sympathy to the president, the families of the victims, and the people of Colombia, while also wishing a swift recovery to those injured, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The incident involved a C-130 Hercules aircraft that went down on Monday near the Amazonian town of Puerto Leguizamo in southern Colombia, close to the Peruvian border. The crash resulted in at least 69 fatalities and left 57 others injured.
Reports also indicated that several local residents were hurt while attempting to assist survivors, after munitions from the aircraft detonated at the crash site, compounding the scale of the tragedy.
