Jeff Bezos is expanding his climate-focused investment strategy into fashion, backing the development of next-generation textiles that could reduce the industry’s dependence on fossil-fuel-based materials.

Through the Bezos Earth Fund, Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos have committed $34 million to support research into biodegradable fibers, plastic-free synthetic silk, and other innovative materials derived from bacteria and agricultural waste. The initiative aims to replace conventional fabrics such as polyester and viscose, which are widely used but linked to carbon emissions, microplastic pollution, and environmental degradation.

The funding will support leading institutions including Columbia University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, Clemson University, and the Cotton Foundation. Researchers are exploring scalable alternatives that could reshape textile manufacturing while reducing reliance on petroleum-based fibers and resource-intensive crops.

Despite growing interest in sustainable materials, cost and scalability remain major barriers to adoption. The Bezos Earth Fund believes breakthroughs from this research could reach consumers within three to five years, potentially accelerating the fashion industry’s transition toward a more sustainable future.
